As a brand new sewer (started in January of 2010), I didn’t know much about sewing with knits. I knew I wanted to give it a try since so many of my kids clothes were knits. And I liked the idea of reusing old t-shirts (especially my old concert tees) and giving them a new life. (Plus, I’m cheap and didn’t want to throw away money on fabric if I ruined the project.)
Very early on, I stumbled upon Ashley’s website and decided I wanted to purchase the Sienna dress pattern. The pattern pieces and directions were so easy to follow. She gave great tips on how to sew with knits without discouraging me. The first dress wasn’t perfect – but my daughter still wears it. (OK, she’s not even 2, so technically I dress her.) And I’ve made over a half dozen dresses since.
My favorite is definitely the Strawberry Shortcake. (Every time I see it, I think back to the 80s commercial… “Strawberry Shortcake, my you’re looking swell, cute little doll with the strawberry smell.”) I had photos of the dress but none with my daughter wearing it. Until now – see the action shots below.
Since then I’ve read many blogs that talk about their struggles with knits and what they have learned. All of this information has been very helpful. I do think that if I had read it before trying the Sienna dress, I might have passed on an awesome pattern. Since then, I’ve also purchased the LBB Twirl Skirt pattern and LOVE that one as well!
